Patients rarely realize they have Periodontal disease, otherwise known as gum disease. Early signs often cannot be seen, felt or discovered. Gum disease is a slow process. By the time you notice your gums are bleeding, (gingivitis) the bacteria is in place and the beginning process of perio disease has started. At this stage, the periodontal disease is easily treated and reversible. If you have ignored your bleeding gums because you thought it was normal to have blood on your toothbrush, you are likely past the beginning stages of periodontal disease.
When it has progressed past the bleeding gums stage, you may experience pain, gum recession, loose teeth and bad breath (halitosis). At this point, there may be permanent bone loss and gum issues.
At your hygiene visit, the hygenist will exam your gums for early stages of periodontal disease. While they clean your teeth, they will note areas where it is difficult for you to remove plaque or where calculus forms. In addition they will look for swollen gums and will probe pockets around each tooth to measure your gum tissue for signs of this disease.
